Auction is the only way to go. There's almost as much strategy involved in an auction draft as there is in a real baseball game (defensive bids, bringing up home town favorites, using up other players money, driving up prices without getting stuck with a guy hate, holding spots for end of auction bargains, etc.).

@Millsy: I agree that there is more to the issue than whether an auction or a draft is objectively better, since there are issues of simplicity and complexity that really define what "better" means.

I think a huge positive for auctions is that the auction rules are easy to pick up, even if there's a bit of strategy that isn't readily apparent. So maybe even those who just want a simple system would find an auction to meet their needs.

Maybe a better baseball stat analogy would be wRC+... It's more complicated than OBP, sure. But it is also pretty easy to grasp because it is scaled in an intuitive way. So it is complicated in some ways and simple in others.

I think the auction is the best way to run any league. I'm pretty partial to it.

Last year, ESPN began using Live Auction Drafts in its standard formats for both Football and Baseball. It was actually a really great system. I think auctions will always be the preferred method for more advanced players, but those less involved will likely stick with the snake drafts for simplicity. I'd compare it to understanding OBP versus understanding wOBA or something like that. There's significant time costs to understanding auction strategy versus draft strategy.

But don't get me wrong, I'm all for auctions being the standard format.
